The first European to be recorded in history to discover cocoa is the famous Columbus who discovered the New World. As early as June 1502, Columbus arrived on the island of Guanara, near Honduras, on his fourth and final expedition to the Western Indian Ocean, and an indigenous canoe loaded with cloth, pottery, weapons, and cocoa beans came to meet Columbus, hoping to exchange them for goods from Spain. Aboriginal leaders also specially prepared a chocolate drink for him to drink, Columbus mistakenly thought it was almond beans, after drinking it felt bitter and spicy, very difficult to drink, there is no love for it. Ferdinand, the son of Columbus, observed the extraordinary value of this bean and recorded: "In New Spain (that is, present-day Mexico), many beans were used as money, and the natives valued these beans very much." As they were carrying things into the boat, a few beans fell into the water, and everyone scrambled to catch them as if they were their eyes." 

Columbus did not pay much attention to this strange brown bean, which looked like almonds, and Ferdinand did not tell him in time. As a result, he left the cocoa beans and took other things with him, which in his travel report to the king was only described as a way of trading by the natives.
